Vaikkathashtami Festival: Lord Shiva’s Three Avatars

Celebrated in the month of December, the Vaikkathashtami festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva also known as Badrinath in Northern part of India. It is held in one of Kerala’s oldest and most popular ’Vaikom Mahadeva temple’. The Lord appears to have three different forms on this special day along with Goddess Parvati - in the morning as Dakshinamoorthy followed by Kiratamoorthy in the afternoon and as Sambashivan in the evening. The 12 day- long festival is held during the ‘Vrishchika’ month, which begins on November 17. Long processions of people carrying deities are some of the common sights of this festival. People come together and celebrate this harmonious festival with devotion and joy. The high repute of the temple sees many devotees from different part of the states coming in on this auspicious day to offer their prayers to the Lord.
