Bhagavad Gita - The Relevant Hindu Scripture

Bhagavad Gita holds many truths about human life. These truths were transferred to Pandava King Arjuna by Lord Krishna before the war of Kurukshetra. Arjuna’s mind swirled in dilemma when he thought of fighting the battle with his cousins-Kauravas, his respected teachers and friends. Lord Krishna, in response to his confusion and sorrow, narrates those truths with many examples. He makes Arjuna understand the duties of a prince and a warrior.

Krishna advises Arjuna about the concept of dharma and its importance. He says atman or the soul is greater than the human body and it is immortal unlike the mortal physical self. Krishna makes him understand the importance of karma in his life and asks him not to refrain from karma by running away from war field. He teaches many aspects about life and the prime truths such as Ishwara (the supreme power in this world), Jiva (the soul), Prakriti (the nature), Dharma (duties in one’s life) and Kaala (time). Krishna tells Arjuna that the war of Kurukshetra is Dharma Yuddha, which means a combat for justice.

Bhagavad Gita (Gita) is also known as Gitopanishad because of the messages contained in the scripture. Hindus across the world consider Bhagavad Gita to be holy and conduct recitation in temples.
